The meat industry is driven by profits with inhumane treatment of beasts and vast land use, this has environmental consequences, such as deforestation, threatening ecosystems, and contributing to climate change. This work begins in Britain with ‘Mad Cow’ and ‘Foot & Mouth’ crises. Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE), known as Mad Cow disease, is a fatal, neurodegenerative disease in Cattle. BSE was caused by feeding infected protein supplements and cheap animal remains to cattle. 4.4 million cows were killed, several thousand people have died worldwide from Creutzfeldt-Jacob disease. ‘Foot & Mouth’ a viral flu, affecting cloven hoofed animals, causes 6 months more feeding to get a beast ready for sale. In 2001 it caused a crisis in British agriculture and tourism; 6 million beasts were killed. 25 million dogs are eaten, every year, worldwide. For some eating a cow or a dog is taboo. What is man’s relationship, to the beast he sometimes loves, kills and eats.

20 imagesMad Cows Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE), commonly known as Mad Cow disease, is a fatal, neurodegenerative disease in Cattle. Infected cows have symptoms of spongy degeneration in brain and spinal cords. Classic symptoms are the inability for the beast to stand up properly. BSE was caused by giving infected protein supplements to very young calves, also by feeding cattle, normally herbivores, with cheap discarded remains of other cattle, in the form of meat and bone meal mixed with their daily feed. Creutzfeldt-Jacob disease in humans is believed to be transmitted from cows carrying BSE. Several hundred humans have died. The meat industry is always cutting corners, motivated by profits and cheaper production costs, rather than producing quality food in a humane caring environment. Foot & Mouth Foot & Mouth affects cloven hoofed animals. Its a type of viral flu, easily spread. Symptoms can be serious but animals can develop a resistance to it. The threat of Foot & Mouth, is that it can cost the meat industry an average 6 months more feeding to get a beast ready for sale at its prime weight. The meat industry is motivated by profits and cheaper production costs, rather than producing quality food in a humane caring environment. Over 6 million cows and sheep were killed in an eventually successful attempt to halt the disease. Cumbria was the worst affected area of the country, with about half cases. Dog Meat In Cambodia, some eat dog meat, but it is not a mainstream diet. It is generally a poorman's meat, cheaper than beef, pork or chicken. Whilst the practice of hunting and catching stray dogs is common place, occasionally they will poach better fed domestic dogs, tempting them out onto the street with raw meat. When caught these poachers can be attacked and stoned by mobs, until arrested by police. The Khmer prefer wild dogmeat to 'farm' grown dogs. Either way, dogs are treated inhumanely, killed by strangulation or even boiled alive. It is thought, by some, that a dog filled with fear makes better meat. Dog is considered 'hot meat', whilst cat is 'cold meat'. The dead animal is shaved, burnt and butchered. Favorite khmer dishes include dog paw curry and dog's head. Dog meat is eaten all over the world. An estimated 25 million dogs are eaten every year. For some societies eating dog is a taboo, for others its acceptable. In some cultures dogs or horses as our best friend, in others cows. To some there may be no difference, all are sentient beings.
