Whilst some people eat dog meat, it is not commonplace. But it is a poorman's meat as it is a cheaper than beef, pork or chicken. The practice of hunting and catching stray dogs is common place, and sometimes even poaching domestic dogs. The Khmer prefer wild dog to 'farm' grown dogs. However the dogs are often treated inhumanely, and killed by strangulation or even boiled alive. It is thought by some that a dog filled with fear makes better meat. The animal is shaved and butchered. Favorite khmer dishes include dog paw curry and dog's head.

Dog meat is eaten all over the world. An estimated 25 million dogs are eaten every year. For some societies eating dog is taboo, for others its acceptable.
