  • France's ostentatious interior decorator and landscape architect, self-made man Jacques Garcia in his Norman country retreat 'le Chateau du Champ de la Bataille. He is responsible for the Parisian Ladurée teahouse and Hotel  Costes. His client list includes the Sultan of Brunei. He bought the chateau, one hours drive from Paris, at le Neubourg in Normandie, twenty years ago and faced with one of the great masterpieces of French Architecture, his self appointed task was to make it more sublime. Hardly touching the facade, he re-designed the interiors to be lavish interpretations of Baroque, recalling Louis XIV and Marie Antoinette. The stylish gardens contain Roma style temples, an amphitheatre and fountains.  The chateau, open to the public, attracts 30,000 visitors per year. He likes to take trips, with his mother and cousins, on his uncle's scooter.

The Green School (Bali) is one of a kind in Indonesia. It is a private, kindergarten to secondary International school located along the Ayung River near Ubud, Bali, Indonesia. The school buildings are of ecologically-sustainable design made primarily of bamboo, also using local grass and mud walls. There are over 600 students coming from over 40 countries with a percentage of scholarships for local Indonesian students.<br />

The impressive three-domed "Heart of School Building" is 60 metres long and uses 2500 bamboo poles. The school also utilizes renewable building materials for some of its other needs, and almost everything, even the desks, chairs, some of the clothes and football goal posts are made of bamboo.<br />
<br />
The educational focus is on ecological sustainability. Subjects taught include English, mathematics and science, including ecology, the environment and sustainability, as well as the creative arts, global perspectives and environmental management. This educational establishment is unlike other international schools in Indonesia. <br />
<br />
Renewable energy sources, including solar power and hydroelectric vortex, provide over 50% of the energy needs of the school. The school has an organic permaculture system and prepares students to become stewards of the environment. <br />
<br />
The school was founded by John and Cynthia Hardy in 2008.

  • Europe, France, Camargue, Saintes Maries de la Mer. Gypsies and local Arlesians share a party at Saintes Maries de la Mer. The Gypsy festival "le Pelerinage des Gitans aux Saintes Maries de la Mer" takes place every year in mid May. Gypsies arrive from all over Europe a few weeks before the main festival days, the 24th and 25th May.  The pilgrimmage is Catholic but many Gypsies, Manouche, Gitans, Roma come to see their patron 'Saint Sara' and for the festival atmosphere, the yearly gathering of friends, the music and dance. Gypsies are still regarded with much distrust and racism, they are not liked by the shopkeepers but are well treated by the gentry, especially the Baroncelli family who were instrumental in making this officially a Gypsy festival. One Hundred years ago the Gypsies were not allowed into the church, as it is they still have to camp outside the town.

Held on 5 November, the event not only marks Guy Fawkes Night - the date of the uncovering of the Gunpowder Plot in 1605 - but also commemorates the memory of the seventeen Protestant martyrs from the town burned at the stake for their faith during the Marian Persecutions. Lewes is home to the largest and most celebrated of the festivities in the Sussex bonfire tradition. There are seven societies putting on six separate parades and firework displays throughout Lewes on November the 5th. As well as this, 25-30 societies from all around Sussex come to Lewes on the fifth to march the streets. There is a history of religious antagonism and anti-popery around the bonfire celebrations in Lewes. A number of large effigies are drawn through the streets before being burned at the bonfires, these "Enemies of Bonfire" range from nationally reviled figures to local officials.
