• YOUTHS TEENAGERS, Amazon, near Boavista, northern Brazil, South America. Youths and teenagers waiting around, with little to do, maybe unemployed or at weekend. Ecological biosphere and fragile ecosystem where flora and fauna, and native lifestyles are threatened by progress and development. The rainforest is home to many plants and animals who are endangered or facing extinction. This region is home to indigenous primitive and tribal peoples including the Yanomami and Macuxi.

 • Roma squat in the snow in one of the largest Roma encampments 'bidounvilles' outside Paris. Winter, Sarcelles, Paris suburbs, France

Eastern european Roma migrants, often from Romania and Bulgaria, searching for better opportunities, they move near to western european cities. They typically are poor and live in squats, here around the periphery of Paris, in the suburbs 'banlieu' where they typically build ramshackle homes from recycled wooden panels and corrugated iron, or sometimes benders made from branches covered in tarpaulins. They live in woods and forest, industrial estates or derelict buildings. Life is especially difficult for them in the harsh conditions of winter and rain. Most of these camps get destroyed by police and Roma are eventually evicted, some deported back home or moving on to build another home. They often survive by recycling metal and electronic goods, selling recycled clothes and objects they find in trash bins, or through begging or playing music on the city streets or inside metro stations. Paris, France
• CAR ADVERTISEMENT. Rocinha Favela, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, South America. Favela and advertisement for car. Although Rocinha is technically classified as a neighborhood, many still refer to it as a favela. It developed from a shanty town into an urbanized slum. Today, almost all the houses in Rocinha are made from concrete and brick. Some buildings are three and four stories tall and almost all houses have basic sanitation, plumbing, and electricity. Compared to simple shanty towns or slums, Rocinha has a better developed infrastructure and hundreds of businesses. There is also lots of deliquency, crime and drugs in the favelas.
